SERVING FREE MEALS TO THE MATURE COMMUNITY TO IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE

Overview

After holding many seminars at the Delta Community Center on finance and legal matters with which our members may be confronted, the Baltimore Alumnae Emeritus Committee of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. turned to health concerns. Our programs subcommittee suggested an intergenerational approach. Toward this end, in April 2008, we joined the Eating Together Program of Baltimore City, which is run by the Division of Aging and Care Services of the Baltimore City Health Department.

Story

Through this program, the Emeritus Committee receives prepared meals to serve free of charge to persons aged 60 and older, at the Delta Community Center, every Thursday. Donations from participants are accepted.

The agenda for Eating Together includes cards and other games for attendees each week from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bible study and line dancing are scheduled for 10:30 to 12:30 p.m., twice a month. Many persons who reside near the community center come for these activities.

The committee periodically holds seminars before or after lunch on topics of interest to mature persons, such as real estate, insurance, funerals, estate planning and legal matters such as wills.

Several times each year for the past seven years, the choir of Martin Luther King Elementary/Middle School has attended the program and provided music. At the end of each year, the committee donates funds to the choir for one of its activities.
