Educational Development Programs

Delta Academy

The Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy is a national initiative created to support the aspirations of at-risk African-American girls aged 11-14 in preparation for the 21st Century. It is designed to provide the young girls with the necessary tools to embrace their strength and worthiness. The Delta Academy program places particular emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) as a way of ensuring that our young girls are ready and prepared to be future leaders in this ever-changing world. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, this program will also focus on how to cope and manage stress as we navigate new life challenges.

Delta GEMS
(Growing & Empowering Myself Successfully)

The Delta GEMS is a natural outgrowth and expansion that encourages the continuation of the highly successful Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy. GEMS was created to catch the dreams of African-American at-risk, adolescent girls aged 14-18. Delta GEMS provides the framework to actualize the inner ambitions through the performance of specific tasks that develop a “CAN DO” attitude. Specifically, the GEMS program provides a road map for college and career planning through activities that provide opportunities for self-reflection and individual growth to define themselves in the changing world.

Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts mission is to build girls of courage, confidence and character, to make the world a better place. This is done through the Girl Scout Leadership Experience – a collection of engaging, challenging and fun activities like earning badges, going on cultural field trips, selling cookies, exploring science, getting outdoors and doing community service projects. Girls are introduced to new experiences and helped to unleash their skills and abilities to help them reach their full potential.

The Baltimore Alumnae Chapter’s Girl Scouts troop leaders address the lack of leadership skills, exposure and community service opportunities among elementary, middle and high school girls in Baltimore City.

Scholarship

The Baltimore Alumnae Chapter is committed to providing higher educational opportunities for high school students enrolled in Baltimore City Public Schools. In keeping with the foundation set forth by the sorority’s 22 founders, the Scholarship Committee offers one-year renewable scholarships to college-bound seniors. Each awarded student is provided at least one mentor from the chapter to assist students in making a smooth transition from high school to college. Mentors provide information, give moral support, and monitor the performance of the students as they progress through their academic programs. Mentors also nurture students as they confront the unique challenges of acquiring a higher education. Applications are due each March and awards are announced in early May.
