Project Description

Physical and Mental Health

The Total Woman: Mind, Body and Spirit

The Physical and Mental Health Committee of the Baltimore Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is invested in making a positive impact on the health and well being of both the community and chapter members. Our focus is on the Total Woman: Mind, Body, and Spirit. We define community as the greater Baltimore area with a focus on lower Park Heights.

We accomplish our goal of focusing on the total woman through the Journey to Wellness program. The commitment to wellness is part of our call to action.

  1. A refocused Lose to Win! To include Physical Activity and Healthy Eating. One activity we participate in to reach this goal is Delta S.I.Z.E.D. – Sorors, Invigorated, Zealous, Energized, and Determined for Physical Activity. In this activity, chapter members are encouraged to walk for fitness and submit their monthly step totals. In addition, zumba and aerobics classes are offered weekly at the Delta center during the months of September through June.
  2. Physical Health: Chronic Diseases. We have partnered with area providers of healthcare, such as Lifebridge, to offer educational seminars on the chronic illnesses that significantly affect the Black community such as Diabetes, High Blood pressure, and cancer. The focus is preventive health and disease management. We also partner with groups, such as the MD Sickle Cell Association, to raise awareness and support fund raising efforts to research for a cure. We support and participate as an award-winning team in the Sickle Cell event titled “Walk with the Stars”.
  3. Mental Health- In keeping with our theme, the chapter partners with local agencies, such as NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), that focuses on education, advocacy, and support programs for persons and families living with mental health illnesses.  We spearhead the chapter’s participation in the annual NAMI walk to raise awareness and funds.

Since its inception, the Physical and Mental Health Committee has met its charge to improve the health of chapter members and the community at large.  The committee is committed to educating and supporting activities and groups that focus on the Total Woman: Mind, Body, and Spirit.
